I recently discovered essential oils when I added lavender to my nightly routine. While I first believed it was just something that smelled nice and may have relaxing qualities, I soon found out that it was a great tool for helping me fall asleep at night. Now, whenever I smell lavender, I'm ready to curl up a take a nap. This is great at night, but not when your coworker pulls out her lavender lotion in the middle of a staff meeting.
Essential oils are so much more than nice smelling liquids you can use as air fresheners. In fact, essential oils are great tools for athletes to promote recovery, rest, and healing. With some touting energy boosting qualities, and others holding the key to better breathing and open airways, there are a lot of ways that essential oils can help you post-workout.

Top 6 Essential Oils for Your Workout by Jenni Hulburt
I never leave home without my essential oils. In fact, there’s not a day that goes by in which I don’t use them for something in my life.
As you might know, nature has a lot to offer when it comes to tools we can use to take care of our bodies. If you’re an active person – runner, yogi, triathlete, mountain biker, or you’re into staying fit and ready for all the adventures life brings – then you probably have some challenges when it comes to feeling your best.
Let’s face it – as an athlete or fitness junkie, you’re often pretty hard on your body! You run trails that make you feel like you’ve been tossed and thrown about, and you go through training sessions that leave you a bit stiff for a couple days.
I have muscle aches and stiffness, dips in my energy, sleep challenges, and seasonal issues that have put me on a search for nature’s solution to these issues. That’s when I discovered essential oils.
There are so many reasons to incorporate essential oils into your life, but here I’d like to share the benefits of essential oils when it comes to training and workouts.
Wake up your senses and get a natural energy boost with Peppermint! In this study, taking Peppermint essential oil internally was shown to improve respiratory function and exercise performance. I also use Peppermint internally to promote good digestive health.
After a hard training session or race, I’m sure you have some sore muscles and joints. I love Peppermint for soothing the aches, especially in a doTERRA blend called Deep Blue – Wintergreen, Camphor, Peppermint, Ylang Ylang, Helichrysum, Blue Tansy, Blue Chamomile, and Osmanthus. It’s perfect for a soothing massage after a long workout (or after long hours on the computer).
How to Use it:
- Rub Peppermint or Deep Blue on your fingers, wrists, shoulders, and neck, or apply on feet and knees before and after exercise.
- Diffuse Peppermint when feeling fatigued or low on energy
- Take Peppermint internally to promote healthy respiratory function and clear breathing
- Apply Peppermint to neck and forehead with Lavender to relieve feelings of tension
Lavender has a long list of benefits. It has been widely used for its relaxing qualities, but it’s really all things “calming” as it soothes occasional skin irritations and reduces appearance of skin imperfections. Apply a couple drops of lavender diluted with fracionated coconut oil to cuts or scrapes (or chafing!) to soothe and support repair.
Lavender can help ease feelings of tension in the body, so add some to your bath water to soak away stress after a hard workout. Do this before bed for a more restful sleep, or add a few drops of Lavender to pillows, bedding, or the bottoms of your feet. This study showed it actually helped improve sleep and mood!
How to Use it:
- Diffuse it while you sleep
- Apply to skin irritations, sunburn, or tense areas
- Add to bath water or mix with water and mist onto pillows and bedding.
How to Use it:
- For occasional skin irritations, apply 1–2 drops of Melaleuca essential oil onto affected area (dilute for young or sensitive skin).
- Add 1–2 drops to water, citrus drinks, or veggie caps to support healthy immune system function.
- Combine 1–2 drops with your facial cleanser for added cleansing properties, or apply to skin after shaving.
- Apply to fingernails and toenails after showering to purify and keeps nails looking healthy.
- Add a few drops to a spray bottle with water and use on surfaces to protect against environmental threats.
This essential oil opens your airways and allows for easier breathing like no other oil! It can actually boost the immune response simply by inhaling. You can try adding a couple drops of Eucalyptus to your chest for easier breathing, or add 5 drops of Eucalyptus and 5 drops Peppermint to a 2 oz. spray bottle filled with water to help cool the body during summer training!
Eucalyptus also has purifying properties that can be beneficial for the skin, for cleansing surfaces, and for cleaning the air. I love the fresh scent of Eucalyptus, and if you need to wake up the body for a race or training session, take a couple drops in your hands and breathe deeply over the nose and mouth.

How to Use it:
- Combine with Lemon and Peppermint in a spray bottle and use it to wipe down surfaces in your kitchen or bathroom.
- Make a cooling spray with 5 drops of Eucalyptus and 5 drops Peppermint to a 2 oz. spray bottle to help cool the body during summer training.
- Before or during a workout (or even while showering) place a few drops in the hands, place over nose, and inhale deeply to invigorate and promote vitality.
Sweet, fresh, citrus – wild orange essential oil is cold pressed from the peel and known for its energizing aroma! High in monoterpenes, Wild Orange possesses stimulating and purifying qualities, making it ideal to support healthy immune system function when seasonal threats are high. Hard workouts can take a toll on your body at a cellular level, but Wild Orange contains powerful antioxidants that help maintain overall health.
I love to diffuse wild orange for an afternoon pick-me-up, and purifying the air. It’s wonderful when combined with other essential oils like Peppermint or Basil.
Wild Orange is part of doTERRA’s On Guard blend – a proprietary essential oil blend which provides a natural and effective alternative for immune support. - For an energizing boost, dispense one to two drops of Wild Orange in the palm of your hand along with equal parts Peppermint and Frankincense. Rub palms together and inhale deeply from palms, then rub on the back of neck.
Basil is one of my favorite oils for feeling more refreshed. It has a spicy, yet herbal aroma known to reduce anxious feelings. Use it before a big race to help you relax and focus. Basil provides great benefits to both the mind and body due to its high linalool content, making it an ideal application to help reduce feelings of tension when applied to the temples and back of the neck. I diffuse basil (with 2 drops each of lemon, basil, and peppermint) to promote focus and a stress-relieving experience.
Basil also acts as a cooling agent for the skin, and may help ease monthly feminine discomfort. It also supports the adrenal glands, which could use a boost with the added stress of hard workouts or long runs!
How to Use it:
- Diffuse to promote a sense of focus before a race or workout.
- Massage with a couple drops of peppermint and carrier oil on back of neck for a stress-relieving experience.
- Take a drop internally to provide soothing support during menstrual cycle.
- Apply 2-3 drops diluted with a carrier oil, to your low back, to support adrenal gland function.
